Problems With Shortcuts

Q. have today received an e-mail containing some photographs of a family christening. I am getting the message: -Drive or Network not available, please insert disk. The file is a .LNK file. Please help.

A. The files you have been sent are in fact shortcuts. The actual pictures have not been sent to you. You will need to contact the  person who sent you the files, and request the actual pictures.

Trouble opening PowerPoint Files

Q. I receive e-mails from my nephew that I cannot open. The messages are PPS files that the machine says are not Bitmap files. Please help!

A. You are correct, the files are not bitmaps, but they are in fact PowerPoint  files.  In order to view them,  you will  need to install Microsoft PowerPoint onto your system. Alternatively, you can contact your nephew and ask them to send you the files in a different format.

Reading DVD ROMs

Q. I have a CD drive and a CD burner. and lots of photo software   I want to take still shots from a DVD and print them . Do I have to get a DVD reader or is there a way to adapt my CD drive so I can view and copy from the DVD?

A. CD-Rom drives are unable to read DVD ROM disks, you will have to purchase a DVD Rom drive to do that! You will also need some DVD playing software.

 

 

 Question about Windows

Testing Hard Drives under Windows XP.

Q. After upgrading to Windows XP, I have been unable to find Microsoft Scandisk, how do I check my hard drive to make sure it is working ok?

A. Double click on "My Computer" and right click on the drive you want to check, then click properties. Click on the "tools" tab, then click "Check Now"
